John was ado 3 CONC pted and his birth parents aren't known. What is know about his place o 3 CONC f birth is taken from the birth certificate of his son, William Ambrose L 3 CONC ander who was born at home on 10 Jan 1892 in Codyville, Washington Co., M 3 CONC E. John is listed on the certificate as the person who reported the bir 3 CONC th to the town clerk of Codyville, and in this record of birth John gav 3 CONC e his own birthplace as Calais, Washington Co., ME. The 1870 Census nee 3 CONC ds to be checked for John's adoptive parents to see where they were and i 3 CONC f he, at the age of about 1 or less was residing with them at the time. 3 CONT 3 CONT Could John Lander, the adoptive father of John Edward Lander have moved t 3 CONC o Topsfield from Codyville? My father maintained that the man who adopt 3 CONC ed John was living in Topsfield as late as 1910. Topsfield is directly w 3 CONC est of Codyville and they share a border - an easy move. 3 CONT 3 CONT Family tradition holds that John's biological parents were surnamed C 3 CONC lark. This hasn't been confirmed through a primary source so remains si 3 CONC mply tradition. All the stories handed down concerning how John came to b 3 CONC e adopted seem to deal with shipwrecks. In one the family was coming fr 3 CONC om England and John survived while his parents didn't. The other shipwr 3 CONC eck has his father accompanying a load of lumber to some port south of C 3 CONC alais when the ship went down and his father drowned. This story makes n 3 CONC o mention of what happened to his mother. We have absolutely no proof t 3 CONC hat any variation on this theme is true, either in its entirety or in p 3 CONC art. 3 CONT 3 CONT The second shipwreck version also indicates that John's father was i 3 CONC n partnership in the lumber trade with a man named "Landaire" (and tha 3 CONC ts just a guess at spelling because its a verbal tradition), and after J 3 CONC ohn's father was drowned he was adopted by this man and his wife. DJohn l 3 CONC ater changing his name to Lander. 3 CONT 3 CONT Heres what little we do know about the couple that adopted John. On t 3 CONC he 1880 Census, when John was eleven years old. He was living with his a 3 CONC doptive parents, John and Elizabeth Lander (so much for the "Landaire" t 3 CONC heory), in Codyville, ME. John Lander Sr, was forty eight years old at t 3 CONC he time, a farmer, who couldn't read or write. He had been born in Cana 3 CONC da and so had both his parents. His wife Elizabeth was fifty, and had a 3 CONC lso been born in Canada. There was also a Fred Thibodeau, age 24 living w 3 CONC ith them. 3 CONT 3 CONT This is interesting because Harriet Knox, the mother of Daisy James 3 CONC , is said to have married a Thibodeau after she divorced Charles James. A 3 CONC ny connection to the Fred Thibodeau living with the Lander family in Co 3 CONC dyville on the 1880 Census? They both resided in Codyville, Maine. 3 CONT 3 CONT Could Fred Thibodeau have been related to either John Lander or hi 3 CONC s wife Elizabeth? Could Elizabeth's maiden name have been Thibodeau? 3 CONT 3 CONT Could the association between the John's biological and adoptive pa 3 CONC rents have been that of blood relation rather than business. Many times o 3 CONC rphan children were adopted by relatives. 3 CONT 3 CONT Now, it seems less than probable that John Lander, unable to read an 3 CONC d write, was running a lumbering business on any scale other than small 3 CONC . While he may have been cutting some timber it was most likely a seaso 3 CONC nal occupation, taken up in winter when farming was on hold. 3 CONT 3 CONT The whole "legend" of shipwreck and what have you seems to be very w 3 CONC eak. More likely is the next family story which holds that on one occas 3 CONC ion, his wife's sister accused John of being illegitimate in front of a n 3 CONC umber of family members. John is said to have remained silent while Dai 3 CONC sy and her sister removed to the kitchen where Daisy chewed her out. 3 CONT 3 CONT If the circumstances of John's birth were in fact, less than kosher, t 3 CONC hen it wouldn't be surprising at all if the family concocted a cover st 3 CONC ory to hide the fact. Whatever the case may be a lot more research need 3 CONC s to be done to try and uncover more about John's origins. 3 CONT 3 CONT John Lander worked for the Bangor & Aroostook Rail Road as a section f 3 CONC oreman for many years. If he followed an earlier trade any mention of i 3 CONC t hasn't been handed down. 3 CONT 3 CONT 2 SOUR @S55@ 2 SOUR @S57@ 1 DEAT 2 DATE 4 OCT 1941 2 PLAC Bangor, Penobscot Co., Maine 1 ADOP 2 FAMC @F2218@ 2 SOUR @S57@ 2 SOUR @S58@ 1 OCCU farmer 2 PLAC Codyville, Maine 2 SOUR @S55@ 1 FAMS @F92@ 1 FAMC @F2218@ 0 @I273@ INDI 1 NAME Daisy Mae /JAMES/ 2 GIVN Daisy Mae 2 SURN JAMES 1 SEX F 1 _UID E980E7F0DD980A4884D24D0C6F47BC7BA31E 1 CHAN 2 DATE 6 Dec 2006 1 BIRT 2 DATE 10 NOV 1872 2 PLAC Topsfield, Washington Co., Maine 2 SOUR @S55@ 2 SOUR @S57@ 1 DEAT 2 DATE 15 NOV 1942 2 PLAC Sherman Mills, Aroostook Co., Maine 1 OCCU housewife 2 SOUR @S55@ 1 FAMS @F92@ 1 FAMC @F2219@ 0 @I283@ INDI 1 NAME Thomas Adolphus /IRISH/ 2 GIVN Thomas Adolphus 2 SURN IRISH 1 SEX M 1 _UID CC0198D88FBA144CAE0A967C5C671F13A5D9 1 CHAN 2 DATE 6 Dec 2006 1 NOTE Settled in Sherman on the farm that was later called "The Old Irish Pla 2 CONC ce".
